CULTURE BASKA KRK
|
Baska is rich at cultural objects of interest: from old buildings up to sacral
cultural monuments. Each step between the stone houses of Baska, which can
tell their centuries long stories, is an experience for itself. On
the cemetery hill, near the former parish church St. John you can find
remainders of the medieval settlement, which was burned-down in 14th Century
by the Venetians. Some beautiful hiking routes start from here - you can get
the detailed information at the local agencies. If you don't want to walk
further on, you can just stand here or sit down for a while: the view from
here above is really impressing!
In the old town centre there is the church of
the Holy Trinity. It is the
largest church of Baska and its environment. It was built in the baroque
style at the beginning of the 18th Century.

In
Jurandvor, about 1.5 km before Baska, there is the church St. Lucija and the
remainders of the Benedictine monastery. In this small church the "board of
Baska" (Bascanska ploca), the oldest Croatian writing document (in
Glagolica) from 11th. Century was found. This testifies a donation of the
Croatian king Zvonimir. In the church a copy of the board can be visited,
the original is kept in Zagreb at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
This old Croatian glagolitics letters remained in use on the island up to
the beginning of 19th Century.

EXCURSIONS TRIP GOALS ON THE ISLAND KRK
|
During your stay in Baska you
can visit also the neighbouring localities (Krk, Vrbnik, and Punat). If you
rather like to explore the neighbouring islands during your vacation, we
recommend the numerously offered daily boat routes. With the car you can
reach the following localities within a distance of 20 km:
Krk -
principal town of the island
Krk
The principal town of the island,
surrounded by forests, lies in a beautiful bay on the wind-protected western
side of the island. The calm island life characterizes the port during the
day and in the restaurants, bars and Cafés at the promenade develop their
brisk art of life.
The objects of interest of the
city Krk:
- The most important object of
interest of Krk is the cathedral, originally a Roman Basilica from the 6th
Century. The today's three-aisle cathedral from the 12th Century with the
bell tower from the 16.-18th Century was rebuilt several times in its
history.

Cathedral in Krk on the island Krk
Croatia
- Kamplin place: there is
a Frankopan castle, which served for the defence of the city in the Middle
Ages as well as the Frankopan court, which was in use since the 12th
Century. In 13th and 14th Century the Frankopans were one of the most
powerful aristocratic families in Croatia.

Croatia
- Small town-gate, which
was mentioned already in 1398, the only gate that leads directly to the city
harbour.
In the summer months many artists
and ensembles appear as guests in the city. To the tradition belong the
celebration of the St. Quirinius, the summer festival of Krk, as well as the
fair of Krk (at the beginning of August).
The most of events take place in
the free or in the historical places: in the cathedral, in the atrium of the
Franciscan monastery in Krk and Kosljun and in the castle of the family
Frankopan.
Vrbnik - island
Krk - Croatia
Visiting the old city of the Vrbnik is nearly a must for each guest of the
island Krk. A medieval small town situated on a 48 meters high cliff, well
known for the Croatian autochthonous white wine "Zlahtina". You should cost
this traditional island wine. If you make an evening walk through by many,
close lanes, visit some art studios and finally, let the evening ends in one
of the cosy "Konobas" enjoying the wine, sheep cheese and seafood
specialities. Between the numerous cultural
monuments in Vrbnik the constitution "Vrbnicki statute" (1388) and the
decorated mass book "Vrbnicki missal" from the year 1642 should be
emphasized, both in the old-Croatian glagolitics letters.

Did you already know that
.... - already in the year 1866
the "association for the adornment" of the city Krk has published the
first picture postcard. This year is regarded as beginning of the
tourism on the island Krk.
- the tourism in Baska has started in the year 1904, when the "association for the adornment of the
place" was created. Very soon after it the first hotel in Baska was established. Some years later many houses and villas were built, so that
in the period between two world wars Baska was able to accommodate up
to 4000 guests.
- the impressive Krk bridge
was in the year 1981 (at the time it was finished) the longest
arch pre-stressed
concrete bridge of the world? Its clear span with a length of approx.
1.3 km has exceeded by 85 meters the largest clear span of a bridge in
the world at that time - the bridge in Sydney!
- that already generations argue about the question, which island is larger, Cres or
Krk.
